Program summary

This qualification is applicable to process plants including food processing. Training and assessment is delivered in the workplace to employees where there is a need to learn and implement improvement processes across the entire organisation.

The qualification is offered as a single qualification or in conjunction with PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations.

The course is structured into 4 clusters of related and complimentary units. The units and activities within each cluster are structured as follows:

  • Clusters 1 and 2 - Planning, preparation, review, discovery and research
  • Cluster 3 – Workplace improvement projects launched and implemented
  • Cluster 4 – Implementation and consolidation of workplace improvement projects followed by measurement, review, evaluation and reflection

Who is it for

This qualification is suitable for manufacturing employees with significant experience of around 4 to 5 years minimum. Where there is a cohort with a mixture of experience at a worksite a small percentage of recent employees and apprentices with some manufacturing experience can be accommodated in the program: Job roles this program is suitable for include:

• Engineering
• Planning
• Laboratory Technology
• Procurement
• Supervisory/leading hand/team leadership roles
This qualification assumes that a learner has current or past work experience where operational or technical skills have already been gained and a supervisory or similar level of responsibility exists. This qualification is not suitable for direct entry from school.

Entry requirements

There are no mandated prerequisite qualification requirements for entry into the Certificate III in Process Plant Operations. However, National Training Services offers these qualifications as a work based training and assessment program. Participants must be employed in a suitable manufacturing company and need to have the support of their employer to undertake the training and assessment program over a period of approximately 14 months. Suitability is determined by identifying if applicants fit the criteria outlined below.

The PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations is a technical qualification for advanced operators and operations technicians who use production equipment to directly produce product. At this level, operators/technicians would undertake more advanced operations, typically of integrated plant units in accordance with the operating procedures, and would apply their knowledge to anticipate problems. They would be expected to solve a range of foreseen and unforeseen problems, using product and process knowledge to develop solutions to problems which do not have a known solution, or a solution recorded in the procedures.

This qualification assumes that a learner has current or past work experience where operational or technical skills have already been gained and a supervisory or similar level of responsibility exists. This qualification is not suitable for direct entry from school.

Other non-technical Certificate III qualifications are available for production support employees at this level, such as MSM30116 Certificate III in Process Manufacturing.

Pathways

After completion of this qualification a student may choose a higher level qualification in the Manufacturing training package. For example PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology.

This qualification is offered by National Training Services.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all components of the qualification, a nationally recognised qualification, PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations will be issued.


Duration

The qualification normally takes 14 months to complete.

Completion Requirements – PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations

To be awarded the PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations competency must be achieved in twenty-one (21) units of competency. The twenty one units are comprised of:

  • Five core units of competency
  • Sixteen elective units of competency, as specified below:
  • A minimum of two of the sixteen elective units must be from the Group A elective list for the qualification.
  • The balance of 14 elective units must be chosen from the Groups A, B and C elective list for the qualification.
  • A maximum of twelve elective units can be selected from the Group C elective list for the qualification.

Up to 4 relevant elective units may be chosen from units in the PMA Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where the units is packaged in a Certificate III or IV qualification.

Time Commitment

All requirements for the course are undertaken in the workplace. Time release from usual work duties is negotiated with the employerby the trainer. Training and assessment activities undertaken in the workplace include:

  • Training Sessions
  • Project planning, implementation and presentation
  • Skills development
  • Assessment

Assessment consists of written or verbal assessment of understanding of competitive systems and practices techniques and tools; workplace observation by the trainer; and project presentations reviewed by the trainer and workplace management.

Government Funding

 

For eligible students training is delivered with Victorian Govenrment funding.
