This qualification is applicable to general manufacturing, basic assembly lines and jobbing shops.
This qualification is designed to be delivered in larger more sophisticated companies that have well developed and systematic induction programs, high-level safety systems and a leadership that understands and supports continuous improvement, safe work practices, and environmental responsibilities. Training and assessment is delivered in the workplace to employees where there is a need to learn and implement improvement processes across the entire organisation.
PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology is only offered in conjunction with MSM40116 Certificate IV in Process Manufacturing.
The course is structured into 4 clusters of related and complimentary units. The units and activities within each cluster are structured as follows:
- Clusters 1 and 2 - Planning, preparation, review, discovery and research
- Cluster 3 – Workplace improvement projects launched and implemented
- Cluster 4 – Implementation and consolidation of workplace improvement projects followed by measurement, review, evaluation and reflection

All participants should be currently employed in supervisory positions in a manufacturing company, or are in development to be upskilled or promoted to a supervisory position.
This program is designed to be delivered in larger more sophisticated companies that have well developed and systematic induction programs, high level safety systems and a leadership that understands and supports continuous improvement, safe work practices, environmental responsibilities
This qualification is suitable for employees in advanced technical operations in manufacturing plants working with process plants such as chemicals and injection moulding. Typically, process plant experience will be in job roles such as:
• Plant Managers
• Workplace Health and Safety
• Maintenance (with a trade qualification)
• Specialist Field Operations staff
This qualification assumes that a learner has current or past work experience where operational or technical skills have already been gained and a supervisory or similar level of responsibility exists. This qualification is not suitable for direct entry from school.
There are no mandated prerequisite qualification requirements for entry into the Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology. However, National Training Services offers these qualifications as a work based training and assessment program. Participants must be employed in a suitable manufacturing company and need to have the support of their employer to undertake the training and assessment program over a period of approximately 14 months. Suitability is determined by identifying if applicants fit the cohort job roles criteria outlined below.
The PMA40116 qualification outlined in this Training and Assessment Strategy is suitable for plant technicians and operations technicians who will typically be involved in solving complex problems which require theoretical knowledge, combined with an understanding of the production process and equipment across the plant.
This qualification is typically used to develop employees performing a technical role that includes an ability to work independently and conduct technical problem solving according to the needs of the work in the chemical, hydrocarbons and refining industries.
Other non-technical Certificate IV qualifications are available for production support employees at this level, such as MSM40116 Certificate IV in Process Manufacturing.

This qualification is not offered by National Training Services.Certification
Upon successful completion of all components of the qualification, a nationally recognised qualification, PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology will be issued.
The qualification normally takes 14 months to complete.Completion Requirements PMA40116 – Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology
Twenty-six units have to be completed. The 26 units are comprised of:
- Five core units of competency
- Twenty-one elective units of competency, as specified below:
- A minimum of one of the twenty-one elective units must be from the Group A elective list for the qualification
- The balance of twenty elective units of competency may be selected in any combination from Group A, units; Group B units and Group C units listed in the qualification packaging rules.
- A maximum of 18 of the 21 elective units can be selected from Group C.
- Up to five relevant units may be chosen from this Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are packaged in a Certificate II (4 maximum), III (4 maximum), IV (5 maximum) or Diploma (1 maximum)
All requirements for the course are undertaken in the workplace. Time release from usual work duties is negotiated with the employerby the trainer. Training and assessment activities undertaken in the workplace include:
- Training sessions
- Project planning, implementation and presentation
- Skills development
Assessment consists of written or verbal assessment of understanding of competitive systems and practices techniques and tools; workplace observation by the trainer; and project presentations reviewed by the trainer and workplace management.
For eligible students training is delivered with Victorian govenrment funding.
